US vs. Singapore, laid out side by side

Tuition, career, immigration. This is my own comparison, backed by real numbers.

🇺🇸 US 🇸🇬 Singapore
Odds of staying / immigrating Very hard — H1B lottery, and even winning it depends heavily on the employer. Decent odds — EP/SP work visas can lead to permanent residency (PR).
Getting PR / a green card Relatively slow, high variance. Relatively fast, clearer path.
Entry-level salary / yr Roughly NT$2–4M. Roughly NT$1.4–2M.
Income tax Around 30% (I was in California, not exactly low pay). Around 5–10%, sometimes lower.
Fallback path to Taiwan Best — a US degree is the most recognized in Taiwan's industry. Increasingly recognized in recent years too.
Tuition / yr Roughly NT$1.2–1.5M. Roughly NT$0.5–1.5M.
Living costs / yr Roughly NT$0.6M. Roughly NT$0.5M.
Total degree cost Roughly NT$3–4.5M. Roughly NT$2.5–3.5M.
Global school reputation World-class — MIT, UC Berkeley, Purdue, and plenty more. Top of Asia — NUS, NTU.
Internship difficulty Very high, brutally competitive. Medium-high.
Full-time job difficulty Very high, especially CS/EE. Medium-high.
Post-grad work visa OPT to job-hunt (longer for STEM); leave if you don't win the H1B lottery. Work visa can be extended, real shot at converting to PR.
Network Strongest (Silicon Valley + business). Strong (finance).
Overall market Software is saturated, IC is brutal competition (especially digital). Mostly software/finance; Singapore recently added IC/semiconductor to its shortage occupation list, which favors foreign talent.
Peer pool Mostly international students, high caliber, very competitive. Mostly international students, high caliber.
Overall value Expensive — payoff could be zero, could be huge. High risk, high ceiling. Not cheap either, but a real shot at PR — strong value for money.

Why listen to Frank Silicon?

Because I didn't research these two paths — I walked them myself.

I'm not an agency, and I don't write your essays for you. I help you understand the game yourself — because after you're admitted, you still have to study, job-hunt, and live abroad.
